These paintings juxtapose the landscape of Israel and the proposed Palestinian state with the landscape of Washington State. Thematically paired, the paintings compare the ancient world and the confines of the modern Middle East with the expanse of the resource rich American West. The paintings were not inspired by religious fervor or political ideology, but by the need for peaceful resolution and mutual understanding. My hope is that the land, the ground on which all people stand, prove transcendent in the context of the painted landscape.
"Kathryn Altus juxtaposes landscapes from the Pacific Northwest and those of Israel and Palestine and invites the viewer to consider the powerful and universal connection people have to the land while expressing the hope of mutual understanding."
