ARTIST'S STATEMENT
My paintings come from a lifetime of living and walking in the Pacific Northwest. Even though the paintings originate from a specific site, my wish is to transcend place and to address the interrelationship of nature and civilization.
The paintings develop slowly, often taking more than a year to complete. I begin by playing with color at the edges of the canvas and then move inward allowing the image to emerge though a complex layering of color, continually deciding what to keep and what to paint out.
I find solace in the space created within the painted landscape. I spend as much effort developing the open areas as the identifiable objects in the painting. My intent is that the air be as full and substantive as the land.
